I had a issue a few years back were i ran out of gas and thought my bike had broken down because the gauge showed a bit over 30 miles left and i'd gone below that before. S after that i was careful not to go below 40. Then it happened again around 40 a year or 2 later. Well, FF to the other day about 2 years since the last time i ran out and my bike shut down on me. I had 70 miles left according to the gauge and no reserve light. I thought surely this has got to be some other issue. I was stuck about 40 miles from home on a fairly rural road and started looking at possibilities. I finally decided while i cant see how it could be out at 70 miles left i would tip my bike over and see if it would pull fuel to the gas line side of the tank and it started. So i rode about a mile and it quit again. Then did it again and went another mile. After that t was done. Luckily a guy stopped to help and he went to a station and got a can and some gas and i was good. Hell of a nice guy and i almost has to wrestle him to get him to let me pay him but i won that one in the end by telling him i'd be really bummed if he didn't take it. Anyways, WTF is this 70 miles left crap? Has anyone else had their bike run dry with that much left in the tank and reserve light not even on yet? What could cause this/ Is there some sensor that might be responsible?

Float has a leak? Hanging on side of tank? Bent rod?
Only way to know is to remove tank and see if sending unit is loose or damaged. I think the gaskets under tank get compressed over time and need to be snugged up. Mine did.

Maybe i'll check/tighten it. But i'm leaving the float and all that as is and i'll just watch my trip meter for now on. Too much trouble. If and when i have to go in again for fuel filter or something else i check it then.

Daz how old is the pump? It's possible that the pump is over heating due to the lack of cooling fuel. When you stopped, waited, then tipped the bike the remaining fuel could have cooled the pump enough to get it going again. Do you recall if the pump sound came on every time?

Replaced it I'd say 10-15k miles ago. Pump always sounded when turning the key. But the problem isnt that, it's the gauge. Soon as i put gas in all was well. But that gauge isn't showing correctly. I thought maybe it;s because i was going downhill from 2400 feet to 500 over 30 minutes but then it should have shown normally once i was on level ground for a few miles. Maybe not long enough on evel ground tho, as you know how the gauge is slow to respond. But 70 miles to go and no reserve light is just a bit too far off i think to be that.

It should be ok at that mileage, I have known pumps to stop due to lack of enough cooling fuel. Next time you have the tank off check the sender with an ohm meter.
